The Meaning of 'Gitana'
When husband-and-wife owners Maria and Fred first envisioned opening a coffee destination in Hermosa Beach, they chose the name Gitana—Spanish for a bohemian spirit, a wanderer unencumbered by rigid conventions. They wanted to build a haven where South Bay neighbors, early morning surfers, remote workers, and traveling families could pause, unwind, and feel an authentic sense of warmth.
Rather than adopting the sterile, transactional aesthetic of big-box commercial coffee chains, Gitana Cafe was constructed around the core principles of Latin American hospitality: genuine greeting, thoughtful craftsmanship, and a space designed for human connection.
The Terroir of Colombian Coffee
Colombia is world-renowned for having some of the most diverse microclimates on Earth for growing specialty Arabica coffee. Coffee trees thrive on high-altitude volcanic slopes beneath tropical cloud canopies. At Gitana Cafe, our base coffee beans are sourced from regions celebrated for their balanced profiles—delivering juicy notes of red apples, milk chocolate, and subtle citrus blossom.
Whether you order our Single-Origin Drip Coffee or an espresso-based drink, you are tasting coffee that has been carefully roasted to showcase origin characteristics rather than heavy char.
A Space Infused with Plant Life and Coastal Light
Walk inside our cafe at 2600 Hermosa Avenue, and the space immediately sets a peaceful tone. Sunlight streams through large front windows, reflecting off bright white walls adorned with works by local artists. Potted monstera, trailing pothos, and lush hanging botanicals provide a serene indoor canopy.
Climb the wooden steps and you'll find an intimate upstairs loft nook seating 2 to 3 people—ideal for quiet reading or creative work. Outside, our umbrella-shaded sidewalk patio offers the premier perch in North Hermosa Beach for people-watching, greeting neighborhood pups, and feeling the coastal breeze.
Community First: The Zero-Surcharge Plant Milk Philosophy
One of Gitana Cafe's defining policies is our commitment to inclusivity. Maria and Fred decided from day one that guests choosing oat, almond, or coconut milk should never be penalized with an extra charge. It is a small gesture that reflects a larger philosophy: everyone is welcome at Gitana's table.
